Featured #bloomgirls: Our Moms for Mothers Day!

"A mother is your first friend, your best friend, and your forever friend." -Unknown

For this month's featured #bloomgirl post, the bloom team wanted to feature the women in our lives who mean the most to us, our mothers!

Cheri Minix, Mother of bloom Co-Founder, Kaylyn Minix!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you have been a #girlboss in your career!
Ever since high school, I have been a leader. President of my school, captain of the cheerleading team. Also an Eagles cheerleader. When you truly strive for something, you will receive it. When I became a nurse, I climbed my way to the top and became the director of nursing. My second career challenge was becoming the director of health services at a boarding school. During this time I also ran my own side business managing a team of private duty nurses. I have always hustled working multiple jobs while still going to school and being a mother. It wasn’t easy but it was worth it!
Who or what is your biggest inspiration? What makes you proud?
I always looked up to my nurse leaders/mentors and aspired to be like them. I always stayed positive and worked very hard. I am very proud of my three successful adult children in their careers. Also, my three loving, adorable grandchildren who I cherish.
What is your biggest accomplishment?
My biggest accomplishment was going to college to further my education while holding a full-time job, a part-time job, and taking care of my three wonderful children.
What is the biggest challenge you've faced in life? How have you overcome it?
Some of the hardest challenges I have faced in life were two car accidents that affected my health. One when I was a teenager, I lost all of my front teeth and went through many surgeries. A second accident more recently that left me nearly disabled. I never gave up hope through all of the hard times. When you have your health you have everything. I was fortunate to seek the best healthcare after both accidents but it was an extremely difficult journey and makes me grateful for my health every day.
What are some life lessons that helped shape you?
My life lessons are: Cherish your loved ones. Tomorrow is never promised.
When you are in an unhealthy situation/relationship, move on quickly.
Live your best life!
How do you keep such a positive outlook on life despite challenges?
Life is short and every day is a gift. I use my bloom products to write down what I am grateful for. Try to record it every morning. Then when life gets tough, read all the blessings you have written. I also have a wonderful support system. I am so grateful for my loving family and friends.
What message would you like to give to anyone going through a similar situation as you have faced?
The most challenging feat for me was my severe back pain which I sustained as a nurse for 35 years. I never wanted a patient to wait, so I lifted and transferred them by myself which over the years weakened my spine. Then I was rear-ended in a car accident which put the icing on the cake. I went through three surgeries which were unsuccessful. I had 4 years of uncontrollable pain and was in bed most of the time. Then a dear friend recommended a neurosurgeon who reconstructed my damaged spine at Mayo Clinic which is the best hospital in the U.S. I now have my life back and I’m so grateful. I would urge anyone in severe pain not to give up. Continue to research for the best resources, care, and experts out there. It took me nearly 5 years to find the right one but it was worth it.
What advice would you like to give your daughter?
My daughter, Kaylyn is brilliant. She has a wonderful career and I wish for her to stay on this exciting path she is on and never look back. Also to set your goals high and be proud of yourself!
What advice would you like to give to the mothers in our bloom girl community?
My advice to other mothers is life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain and if you have to dance by yourself so be it!
What are your favorite bloom products, and why?
My favorite bloom products include the Vision Planner where I can put all my appointments and there’s plenty of space to write recipes, notes, etc. My very favorite bloom product is the Inspirational Desk Easel! Each day we should look at the quote and be proud that we are healthy and able to help others. I know this is one of Kaylyn’s favorites too, we both love our quotes! <3

Marion Hess, Mother of bloom's Social Media Director, Lauren Hess!

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
I would have to say the biggest inspiration in my work life has been my father. He was a depression era child from Newark, NJ who built his own business and raised a family of 6 kids. My father taught me life lessons regarding integrity, honesty, hard work, and keeping family first.
What makes you proud?
My biggest accomplishment has been raising my family. It makes me proud to see my daughters growing into accomplished women who are following their dreams and being true to themselves.
What is the biggest challenge you've faced in life? How have you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I have faced was getting divorced after 28 years of marriage. I'm not sure I have totally overcome it, but I have tried to be honest with my kids, kind to my ex-husband, and positive about the future.
What are some life lessons that helped shape you?
I've always tried to keep family first. As a working mom, I always wanted my kids to know that they were first in my life, even though my professional life took up a lot of my time and focus. We always ate dinner together, never with the TV on! We said prayers before bed and went to church together as a family. We made memories during holidays and family vacations and I took time off from work for important school and sporting events.
How do you keep such a positive outlook on life despite challenges?
I try to stay grounded in the belief that we are all here for a purpose. Life is a journey, not a destination. Hard times will happen and sad things will happen, but that is all part of life. As long as I am learning, growing and loving others along the way, the hard and sad things that happen are learning experiences that shape me into a stronger and wiser person.
What message would you like to give to anyone going through a similar situation as you have faced?
Don't become bitter. Keep a positive outlook. Plan for the future. Keep family and friends close.
What are your favorite bloom products, and why?
I love the Monthly Planner. I use it to schedule the painting events for my small business, Kennett Design. It is very helpful for me to see the entire month at a glance. I can easily see gaps or conflicts in my event schedule and can easily map out future events. I also love the File Folders. I really like to keep my project files organized, and it makes me happy when my files look pretty.

What is your biggest accomplishment?
Raising my three daughters!
What advice would you like to give your daughter?
You are here for a purpose. Be kind to others and be aware of the needs of people around you. Be thankful for what you have. Keep the big picture in perspective when you are faced with a challenge. Have fun and treasure your friends. Keep family first. Have a good work ethic and don't spend more than you make.
What advice would you like to give to mothers in our bloom girl community?
Among all of the jobs and roles that we play, being a mother is the most important. Never lose sight of the fact that your child is more important than your next promotion or accomplishment at work. God has entrusted you with a life to mold and shape for the future. Your imprint on your child is the most important influence in their life.

Deanie Gory, Mother of bloom's Creative Manager, Mackenzie Janus!

Tell us about yourself and how you've been a girl boss in your career.
Hi, I am Deanie Gory, mom of four, nana to 3 and wife to an amazing husband. I am also an interior designer working for an amazing furniture company. When my company created an in-home design department, they asked me to run it. I jumped at the opportunity because it combined my sales ability with my passion for design. The start was slow, but in the 4 1/2 years since the department was created, it has blossomed into the fastest growing sector of our business with sales sky-rocketing and records breaking. I take my clients’ needs very seriously and help my client discover what they love, then create a space that is truly their own.
Who or what is your biggest inspiration? What makes you proud?
My kids will tell you that I am the most sentimental person they know; that's true. My inspiration comes from many sources, but often from my past, my family and my experiences. I believe that our homes are a reflection of our personalities, our life travels, our experiences. It is what makes our home ours and not someone else's. Work-wise, I am most proud when I create a space that fits three foundations; mood, function, harmony. If I present that and the client loves it, that's a great day.  Family wise, I am most proud when my children or grandchildren show empathy for their sibling. Nothing says, “I love you” like putting yourself in your sibling's shoes and truly understanding what they are going through.
What are some life lessons that have helped shape you?
When I was only 10 years old, a drunk driver killed my dad and two of my brothers. Nothing affected me more in my life than that. What I learned is that no minute, no hour, no day is guaranteed; life can be taken away at any minute. Make the most of it. Never leave a conversation with someone you love in a negative way. Always make sure that all is well before you part or hang up that phone. Tomorrow is not promised. I couldn't live with one of my children or my husband not knowing how much I loved them because I was too stubborn.
How do you keep a positive outlook on life despite challenges?
This might sound simple, but it's a choice. I wake up ready for the day. If someone calls early in the morning, I answer the phone, "Good morning!"  Who can react in a negative way when you answer the phone that way? Life is going to hand us all challenges. It’s not the challenge, but how we react to it that says the most about us. I consciously choose to be upbeat, positive, and helpful in every situation. Concern yourself with what you can affect, all the rest is just noise - and life has a lot of noise. When the neighbor says your music is too loud, ask what she would like to listen to, then crank that. Win/win!
What message would you like to give to anyone going through similar situations you have faced?
As a single mom to four, it was a challenge to put myself back out there again in the dating world. To single moms, I would say this; don’t introduce your kids to anyone who is not going to be in your life forever. Though I went out with several men, the only one my kids met was the one who was going to be my husband. We have now been married 18 years, and he is a wonderful stepfather to my kids. Don't confuse your kids with your love life. To them it's not your love life, it's their potential parent. Respect that and protect them.
What are your favorite bloom products and why?
I will be honest and say that anything my daughter designed. For a simple reason: every time I look at the cover, I think of my wonderful daughter and my heart is filled with pride and joy.
What is your biggest accomplishment?
That's an easy one. I raised four amazing children. That being said, I will take it a step further. My children have accomplished what every parent can only hope for. They are each other's best friends. Every parent wants their adult children to be close. The way my children protect each other, communicate constantly, come to each other's aid - everything makes me so proud of them. Do they disagree and fight sometimes? Of course they do, but they have a respect and love that runs deep. Pat on the back to me for helping create that. Big smiles!
What advice would you like to give your daughter?
Trust yourself. I raised you to be someone who could take care of yourself. You have the skills (or will continue to learn them) to be all you need. Being vulnerable is not a weakness. Create a life together with the one person you spend forever with. Become the best you that you can be. Travel! Experience life!
What advice would you like to give mothers in our bloom girl community?
Respect your children. You raised them, now trust them to take your lessons and create their own life. You may not always agree, and that's ok. This is their life, not yours. Let them live it! They will make you proud!
We hope you loved getting to know our mothers a little bit more!
